Tramping and Hunting in the Tummil watershed Ferny Gair Area

Come tramping in a unique piece of bush in South Marlborough with abundant bird life including Robins and Kakarike
The bush features regenerating Beech and Protocarp through to virgin Beech forest.
There are one to 3 day walks available in this area featuring Lake Alexander and the chance to climb to the spectacular views from the Ferny Gair range.

bulletLarge New Hut

Access is by walking or 4wd on a 5km right of way through farmland to a 1200 acre block of privately owned bush which has several km of walking tracks and a large new hut.
Once in this area you may like to utilize the D.O.C.tracks and relocated hut at Lake Alexander .

Suggested walks and times
From public road to end of access road and hut,20 mins drive in 1½ hrs walk in.
From private hut to Lake Alexander 3-4 hrs walk via true left fork of Tummil River .5-6hrs via true right.
Beginning of Access way is 30mins drive from Blenheim via highways 6,63, Waihopai Valley rd and 7km on Avondale rd .
Climb from lake Alexander to Ferny Gair range 3-5 hrs up 2-3 down .
From Lake Alexander over to true right of Tummil and back to private hut 5-6 hrs including climb up Ferny Gair on the way plus 3hrs.
It is possible to start at end of access road and private hut and do a 1, 2 or 3 day loop walk via the lake and back to the start.
Ferny Gair Range


Walks are moderate with occasional steeper pieces and a reasonable level of fitness is required. There are several shallow river crossings good footwear recommended. Private hut sleeps 9. D.O.C. hut at Lake sleeps 6. Bring your own food and sleeping bag etc.
Accommodation available at Avonlea Lodge with advanced bookings.


No Dogs, No Spotlighting, No Trespassing off access road or farm boundaries.
